Louis Vuitton - The story behind the logo

How it all began...

Luggage has evolved beyond the days of giant wooden boxes strapped to the backs of horse-drawn carriages that carried everything you needed for a journey beyond your front door. You may not know it, but we owe a lot of this innovation to the one, the only Louis Vuitton.Today we take some things for granted. Locks that cannot be easily broken or picked, goods made from waterproof materials, stackable boxes and much more. However, in the mid-18th century, these things were not commonplace - or even existed at all. It wasn't until Louis Vuitton designed a rectangular canvas suitcase in 1858 (making it lighter and more water-resistant) that people realized how it made everyday life easier. Gone were the curved suitcases that made stacking impossible. In 1886, Louis and his son Georges went one step further - they invented a simple lock system with two spring buckles that was considered unpickable. Georges even challenged Harry Houdini in a public newspaper to attempt an escape from a locked Louis Vuitton box. Okay, Houdini didn't address it, but we'd like to think it was because he found the challenge too overwhelming.

There is something very aesthetic and fascinating about a vintage Louis Vuitton suitcase - the intersecting L's and V's, built-in hangers, interior compartments with quilted lining, travel stamps from trips around the world, the famous unpickable lock. Want! Need! The vintage Louis Vuitton trunk is no longer just for traveling. There are many customers who use their LV chests as coffee tables or use a cute vintage Louis Vuitton Boîte Falcons Train Case as a jewelry box in the bedroom!

Suitcases aside, Louis Vuitton is one of the most recognizable fashion brands in the world, with its trademark interlocking initials, four-leaf design and signature beige-on-brown color scheme. The fashion house now sells all kinds of goods, from its popular handbags and wallets to belts, accessories and clothing.

Here you can find vintage Louis Vuitton items!
